Allison – Conversational Context and Memory
Allison now remembers past conversations, enabling more natural, coherent, and context-aware interactions with users.
We’re excited to share that in October 2023, Allison became significantly smarter by adding conversational context and memory. Instead of treating each message as a fresh input, Allison now remembers what was said earlier in a conversation — making interactions feel more natural, coherent, and human-like.
This upgrade is a major step toward creating an AI assistant that can follow the thread of a conversation, recall important details, and respond in ways that are contextually aware and relevant.
Why Conversational Context Matters
Traditional chatbots often treat each message in isolation. This means if a user asks a follow-up question — even one directly related to the previous message — the system might fail to understand the reference. For example:
User: “What are your store hours on weekends?”
User: “And do you offer curbside pickup then?”
Without memory, the bot might treat the second question as unrelated, resulting in a disjointed or incorrect response.
Modern AI research demonstrates that storing and leveraging long-term dialogue memory dramatically improves the consistency and coherence of multi-turn conversations. One notable example is the white paper Recursively Summarizing Enables Long-Term Dialogue Memory in Large Language Models, which explains how summarizing past context allows models to generate cohesive responses over extended dialogues.
How We Built Conversational Memory
To give Allison conversational context, we designed a system that captures, summarizes, and utilizes key parts of the chat history. This memory doesn’t store every word verbatim; instead, it focuses on the parts that matter most to ensure relevance in future responses.
Here’s how it works:
- Capture and store conversation turns – Every user input and Allison response is logged.
- Summarize or index important context – The system identifies critical details such as topics, preferences, or specific requests.
- Use stored memory to inform replies – Future responses reference past interactions, allowing Allison to maintain continuity and understanding.
This approach allows Allison to answer follow-up questions intelligently, remember prior decisions, and provide a richer conversational experience.
What This Enables
By adding memory, Allison can now:
